Cristiano Ronaldo drops biggest hint yet at where his future lies

Reporting from Lisbon, December 17, 2015

CRISTIANO RONALDO has dropped the biggest hint yet that his future lies in New York.

The Real Madrid ace, 30, announced yesterday he will open hotels in three cities that are closely tied with his footballing career — Funchal, Lisbon and Madrid.

But the star also announced the opening of a fourth hotel in New York in 2017.

And that will raise serious questions about the possibility of a move to either New York City or New York Red Bulls.

Ronaldo said: “I have always said, and those who know me, know that I’ve always dreamed of having my own hotel.

“My job is to play football but life is not going to be the same always.

“I have to dedicate myself to this new project — which leaves me very happy because it is something I have always dreamed of.”

The ex-Manchester United star has previous hinted he could see out his career in the MLS.

He also bought an £11.1million apartment in New York earlier this year.

The former Manchester United star has previously said he would like to play there.

The striker, who last year took home £52m in salary and sponsorship, described the planned four hotels — which will cost a WHOPPING £54M — as being “the four corners of the earth”.

In conjunction with Pestana, the biggest hotel group in Portugal, his chain of CR7 hotels will have more than 500 beds.

The first of his hotels will open in Funchal, Medeira in 2016 — which is the biggest tourist attraction in Portugal, accounting for 25 per cent of the city’s GDP.

It is where the star is from.

There is even a museum dedicated to him in the city — as well as a statue of the star in the city’s square.

The 30-year-old added that the hotels were an investment for his future and his son and other family members.

He added: “I’m extremely happy because this is the biggest project in my life and it’s completely different to what I do. I’m thinking about my future, and my son and members of my family.”

His contract is up at Real Madrid in 2018 when the star will be 33.

And he has come under heavy criticism for his performances in La Liga this season.

Dionisio Pestana who owns the Pestana chain, and is one of the richest men of his native country, said he “wanted a lifestyle hotel” which was why he decided on the CR7 partnership with Ronaldo.
